Back in the early 2000s, we didn\u2019t even use the term \u201cUX design.\u201d You were just a <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">web designer<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, and that meant you did <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">everything<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. Visual design? That was you. Front-end coding? Also you. UX? You figured it out on the fly. Animations? Yep, fire up Flash and hope it didn\u2019t crash your computer. Accessibility? Uh\u2026 does \u201cmake the text bigger\u201d count?<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">I was working at a scrappy startup where my job title could have just been \u201cPerson Who Makes the Website Happen.\u201d There were no dedicated UX researchers, no UI designers, no front-end specialists\u2014just me, a bunch of HTML files, and the vague hope that users wouldn\u2019t get too lost navigating the site. If a button was hard to click or a layout made no sense, that was <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">my<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> problem. And let\u2019s be honest, most of us were just guessing what worked. We didn\u2019t have heatmaps, A\/B testing, or fancy user data\u2014we had our gut instincts and the occasional email from an angry user saying, <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cI can\u2019t find the login button. Please help.\u201d<\/span><\/i><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">With the dot-com bubble burst came a wake-up call\u2014ugly, slow, and inaccessible websites were no longer acceptable. Businesses began to understand that their websites needed to be user-friendly, or they would lose customers. CSS replaced the clunky tables we had been using, giving us more control over layouts and typography.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">During this era, UX design became more structured. Concepts like information architecture and user-centered design gained traction. But with that structure came the first real restrictions. Design started to become more standardized. Blogs looked like blogs. Corporate sites looked like corporate sites. While this made for a more predictable user experience, it also took away some of the creative chaos that made early web design exciting.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">One of the biggest shifts was the rise of mobile devices. When the first iPhone launched in 2007, it forced us to rethink everything. Mobile-friendly design went from being an afterthought to a necessity. Responsive design took over, and with it came a new wave of conformity\u2014grids, columns, predictable layouts. Companies were hiring UX researchers, usability analysts, and interaction designers. We stopped relying on gut instinct and started making data-driven decisions. A\/B testing became the norm, and we were using heat maps to understand user behavior.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">But as much as we were improving the user experience, something was getting lost\u2014creativity. Websites and apps started to look eerily similar. The rise of WordPress templates meant thousands of websites looked nearly identical, with only colors and fonts differing. Flat design took over, and everything started feeling\u2026 the same.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Another significant shift was the rise of platform-specific restrictions. If you wanted to launch an app on the Apple App Store, you had to follow their strict design guidelines. No deviation, no risky UI choices\u2014just compliance. AI-driven personalization tailors experiences to individual users. Voice interfaces and augmented reality have opened up new dimensions of interaction. But has it made UX design better, or just more formulaic?<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Dark mode is everywhere (finally, a win for old eyes like mine!), but beyond that, everything feels optimized, predictable, and safe. Look at any modern website, and it\u2019s hard to tell where one design ends and another begins. Squarespace, Shopify, and WordPress templates have made launching a website easier than ever, but they\u2019ve also stripped away the soul of web design. It\u2019s all grid systems, white space, and hero images\u2014no more wacky, experimental layouts, no more weird interactive experiences just for the sake of it.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><\/span><\/p>\n<p>Now, with everything so standardized and devoid of personality, it's almost ironic that big companies with deep pockets are turning to pricey creative agencies to inject some character back into their designs. Bold colors, experimental layouts, retro typography\u2014anything to break free from the endless sea of bland gray, white, and black. In our quest to escape the chaos of the early web, we've somehow cornered ourselves into a world of uniformity. But one thing hasn\u2019t changed: the goal of making technology easy, intuitive, and enjoyable to use. Whether it\u2019s a website, an app, or a voice assistant, good UX is all about putting the user first.<\/span>\u00a0<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In the end, UX is about more than just making things look pretty\u2014it\u2019s about making life better, one user-friendly experience at a time. Now, go forth and design something amazing.
