Enter Socrates\u2014the original troublemaker, philosopher, and, if we\u2019re being honest, probably the kind of guy you\u2019d avoid at a party because he\u2019d keep asking, \"But how do you <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">really<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> know that?\"<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Socrates\u2019 method of questioning\u2014now known as the Socratic Method\u2014wasn\u2019t just about proving people wrong (though he was excellent at that). It was about getting people to think deeper and not just accept things at face value. Unfortunately, the Athenians weren\u2019t huge fans of his constant questioning, and they sentenced him to death. The lesson? After centuries of \u201cbecause I said so,\u201d people started asking, \u201cSays who?\u201d This was the age of Leonardo da Vinci, Galileo, and Copernicus\u2014thinkers who looked at the world and said, \u201cWait a minute, maybe the Earth isn\u2019t the center of the universe.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Galileo, for instance, used his telescope to prove that the Earth revolved around the Sun. When the Church told him to shut up, he famously muttered, \u201cAnd yet it moves.\u201d (Okay, he probably didn\u2019t say that, but it makes for a great story.) Thinkers like Voltaire, John Locke, and Immanuel Kant championed reason, science, and individual rights. They argued that people should use their brains to question authority, challenge tradition, and seek truth.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Voltaire, used wit and sarcasm to skewer superstition and injustice. His famous quote, \u201cI disapprove of what you say, but I will defend to the death your right to say it,\u201d is a rallying cry for intellectual freedom. Think of it as the mental equivalent of checking the expiration date on milk.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Take the rise of social media, for example. Platforms like Twitter and Facebook are like a buffet of information, but not everything on the menu is good for you. Critical thinking helps us separate the facts from the nonsense. For instance, when someone shares a post claiming that drinking bleach cures COVID-19, a critical thinker might ask, \u201cWho said this? What\u2019s their evidence? And why does this sound like a terrible idea?\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Modern critical thinking is also closely tied to problem-solving. His investigation revealed that the technology didn\u2019t work, and the company was built on lies. Thanks to critical thinking, a massive fraud was exposed.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>\u00a0<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Critical thinking also helps us build our own opinions. Instead of blindly accepting what we\u2019re told, we can weigh the evidence, consider different perspectives, and make informed decisions.
